Our world is made up of many individuals bound together and coexisting in a complicated, many faceted relationship. My paper cuts reflect this concept.
Each hand cut shape is an individual referential image which when combined becomes a unified abstract design.
When I'm cutting intricate designs in paper my mind lets go of all the distractions of life, I become calm and relaxed in a way similar to when actively observing nature. My paper cut landscapes evoke those peaceful times spent outdoors.
WINTERWORKS Paper Cuts by Lucinda Clarke are interlocking images of insects, animals and trees made in the tradition of cut paper snowflakes. The resulting unique designs are presented in many forms. Individually cut designs are pinned and framed in shadow boxes or incorporated into mixed media assemblages. Handmade paper whose fibers add dimension and tactile quality are often used. The leaves which are embedded in the paper become part of the images. Designs are also cut from paper towels which are later painted to add rigidity, color and texture. Smaller paper cuts are laminated for use as bookmarks, mounted on hand painted paper as note cards and utilized as stencils on furnishings. Reproductions of designs are printed onto note cards and clothing.
